Shipping Containers Provide a Sound Solution

The impact of noise pollution on residential areas can be a major concern for many construction projects. A recent upgrade undertaken along the Tullamarine Freeway in Victoria has seen Royal Wolf deliver an innovative solution to this challenge by hiring out a series of shipping containers to serve as acoustic barriers to reduce the impact of construction noise on local residents.

Work on the Thiess Tullamarine Joint Venture M80 Freeway Upgrade commenced in late 2010 to improve road safety and reduce congestion with the creation of additional lanes. As with all major construction projects, the noise associated with the upgrades was a serious issue that needed to be addressed.

In response to this significant need, Thiess called upon its ongoing relationship with Royal Wolf to provide a quick response to this necessary component of the construction operation.

For the Tullamarine Freeway, Royal Wolf hired out a total of 223 shipping containers under a hire arrangement in various locations spanning close to 1.8 kilometres in distance. The Royal Wolf containers are a combination of both 40 foot and 20 foot shipping containers that are capable of absorbing a significant amount of the surrounding noise.

John Ahkin, Royal Wolf Melbourne Business Development Manager, said, “The containerised acoustic barriers Royal Wolf provided along the Tullamarine Freeway were considered an ideal solution for the client. Our containers were ready for supply and install and could be hired for the duration of the project – six to twelve months.

For this project Royal Wolf was able to provide a flexible, quick, and financially viable solution that met the requirements of Thiess. The containers can be moved in and out of different topographical locations within a short time frame and with minimum disruption to the construction work.”

Royal Wolf containers have been used effectively in reducing noise pollution on a number of other recent projects including the Future Music Festival in South Australia, Big Day Out in Melbourne and the Urban Super Highway at Angle Park in Adelaide.
