Emergency Response Pods

Remote crisis situations create huge challenges for emergency professionals such as Ambulance Victoria. A recent innovation created in conjunction with Royal Wolf is easing the pressure through the introduction of portable medical clinics built using modified shipping containers.

Royal Wolf was approached by Field Primary Care Clinics – a department of Ambulance Victoria – with a plan to purchase and modify nine shipping containers which would be used as three field medical clinic units that could be quickly deployed in remote emergency situations.

The initial idea came after the 2009 bushfires when emergency services struggled to reach and assist people in remote areas. The development of the emergency pods now provides a base for medical staff working in areas without hospital support so they can care for patients and the injured.

John Hutchings, Royal Wolf Sales Executive for Victoria said modified shipping containers were the ideal solution – portable, secure, weatherproof and cost effective. “Our shipping containers can be modified to individual customer specifications, so they offered the perfect solution to Field Primary Care Clinics and Ambulance Victoria.  Royal Wolf engineers and draftsman worked closely with Ambulance Victoria’s team on the internal design that includes a temperature controlled drug safe, specially designed racking, electricity and water supply points, air conditioning units, generators and access ramps for stretchers and hospital beds. Royal Wolf is proud to be involved in the project which means Ambulance Victoria can provide a better service to people in need when the next disaster strikes.”

Justin Dunlop, Head of Emergency Management at Ambulance Victoria added, “We looked at a variety of solutions but the Royal Wolf shipping containers provided the total solution to our needs. We’re extremely impressed with the finished product and they have already performed to our very high standards when used in flood affected areas earlier this year in Charlton, Victoria.”
